Ramadan is one of the most sacred months of the year for Muslims, a holy period of fasting and reflection marked by obligatory fasting from dawn to sunset. During Ramadan, two meals take center stage to help sustain energy levels during the fast and provide essential nourishment: Suhoor, a pre-dawn meal, and Iftar, the meal to break the fast. Having a pantry well-stocked with healthy, delicious Halal foods can make Ramadan a time of even greater spirituality and contemplation. International Fresh Market will cover some essential ingredients that can boost energy and replenish vital nutrients during this most holy time of the year.

Suhoor is the meal consumed early in the morning before fasting or pre-dawn. It’s important for those participating in fasting to eat a meal that provides lasting energy throughout the day, with slow-digesting, fiber-rich, and hydrating foods. Grains and whole foods should be a key part of any Suhoor feast since grains like oats, quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat bread provide sustained energy throughout the hours that follow.

Include a protein source as well, such as Greek yogurt, eggs, and cottage cheese. Nut butters are also a good option to enhance fullness. They can be spread over crackers or bread, or eaten with fruit for a protein and fiber boost. Consider easy snacks like boiled eggs, peanut butter on whole wheat toast, and yogurt smoothies. These are all delicious and can be made with easy pantry or refrigerator ingredients. Hydrating foods such as fruits and chia seeds provide a fiber boost as well, especially when served in fresh fruit bowls, soaked chia seed pudding, or a simple smoothie.

The meal eaten after sunset, Iftar is the religious observance of the end of the fast. Dates are one of the traditional foods eaten at the end of a fast, since they are mentioned many times in the Quran and have long been associated with Ramadan. Additionally, dates have a host of nutritional benefits, including natural sugars for energy and fiber for digestion. If you don’t like dates by themselves, add a twist by stuffing them with nuts or nut butter or drizzling with some honey.

Hydrating foods are also ideal for the end of a fast. A simple soup of lentils, chickpeas, and vegetable broth is comforting and delicious, while a classic chicken soup incorporates protein for satiety. Other great protein sources include fish, lamb, and plant-based proteins, such as tofu, paneer, and legumes. For a quick protein boost, consider a simple dish of grilled meat or a rich, flavorful curry. Soup is an excellent option for those short on time since the ingredients can be added to a slow cooker or stock pot and simmered for hours, until the fast is over and everyone is ready to sit down for the post-sunset meal.

Incorporate carbs for energy at the end of your fast. Iftar should feature rice, pita bread, couscous, and whole grains to replenish energy stores. A few familiar favorites include Kabsa, a delicious spiced rice dish, samosas, and pita with baba ganoush or hummus. These options are quick, simple to prepare, and hearty.

Your pantry should always include a few essential spices and seasonings to elevate and enhance Ramadan meals. Coriander, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, and sumac all add depth of flavor and can easily be incorporated into both savory and sweet dishes. Keep some healthy cooking oils and fats on hand for cooking and flavoring dishes. Ghee, olive oil, and coconut oil are all delicious and can be used in a myriad of ways, including drizzling over roasted vegetables, making desserts, and sauteeing.

Nuts and seeds are quick and easy and provide a burst of energy. Cashews, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and flaxseeds are perfect for topping desserts or savory dishes. They are also delicious when added to energy bars, nut-based desserts, and trail mix. If serving others, consider putting a mixture of nuts and seeds in small bowls around the table, for easy snacking before or after the fast.

Dessert serves as a reward after a period of fasting and provides a reminder of the sweetness of time spent with family and friends. While there are endless options for sweet treats, a few popular options include Baklava, rice pudding, and qatayef, sweet stuffed pancakes. Kunafa, the traditional shredded phyllo dessert, is also an excellent option and is guaranteed to satisfy any appetite at the end of a long day. Raisins, dates, and fruit can be stirred into rice pudding for a show-stopping and flavorful treat.

If you’re watching what you eat but still want to participate in dessert, consider incorporating a few healthier options into the lineup. Date and nut energy balls, yogurt-based sweets, and fruit-based treats such as a simple fruit tart or a trifle still feel decadent but are relatively low in sugar. If you’re planning a post-fast meal with family and friends, ask to see what everyone would enjoy most and create the meal plan accordingly. Dessert (and any other part of the meal) doesn’t have to be extravagant to be delicious and satisfying.
